A new memorial honoring Wyoming veterans is being planned for a section of Lions Park in Cheyenne, and fundraising efforts for the project are underway.

The memorial, named Freedom Point, is planned to be in the southeast corner of Lions Park and will feature the Soldier’s Cross, a battlefield tribute known to every veteran. Surrounding the cross will be an eight-point compass rose, symbolizing unity across all branches of the military. Beyond that, six distinct areas will be tributes to military veterans, including:

  • The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, which will feature an 80 percent replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.
  • The Global War on Terror Tribute, which will honor veterans who have served in campaigns related to the War on Terror around the world and will feature a commemorative bronze sculpture;
  • The Desert Storm Memorial, which will include a bronze sculpture to remember those who served in the Gulf War;
  • The Military Branch Plaza, which will include a display of each military branch’s flag and bronze statues honoring each branch;
  • The POW/MIA Headstone Section, a solemn area dedicated to those who were prisoners of war or missing in action; and
  • A tribute to the War at Home, honoring veterans who have died by suicide and remembering those who made it home but carried the weight of war long after the battlefield.

In addition, Freedom Point will include a space for first responders – firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical technicians. This area will honor those who are the first to arrive and last to leave, running toward danger when others run away.

“This project is more than a memorial,” said Jason Sanchez, the City’s Community Recreation and Events director. “It will be a space for reflection, education, and healing and is a way for our community to honor those who served.”

The concept for Freedom Point came from the combined efforts of several community groups, including the Compass of Honor Memorial Foundation, Leadership Cheyenne, and the Veterans Remembrance Memorial, along with the City’s Community Recreation and Events Department.

The project was formally announced on April 22 at a performance of the United States Army Field Band at the Cheyenne Civic Center.

“Freedom Point is where veterans will feel seen, where families can find peace, and where students will learn what service truly means,” Mayor Patrick Collins said.

Freedom Point will be located in a section of Lions Park just south of the pickleball courts near the intersection of Central Avenue and 8th Avenue. Fundraising continues for the project, which is tentatively scheduled for completion in Spring 2026.

Those interested in supporting the memorial financially can purchase bricks that will be part of the memorial. Other donation levels are also available.
