Mural project announced for two Cheyenne water tanks

Visit Cheyenne, Discover Cheyenne, the Board of Public Utilities (BOPU), Arts Cheyenne, and the City of Cheyenne are excited to announce a collaborative effort to create another iconic art and cultural landmark in the city. This time, the spotlight is on the two water tanks perched above Storey Boulevard – visible from many vantage points throughout Cheyenne, including several main entrances into town.

Funds for this mural project will be drawn from a variety of sources, including help from a private citizen, Cortney Johnson, who has volunteered to help raise donations. A call for mural artist proposals will be released soon, and a panel consisting of representatives from the partnering organizations will select the winning design. Public input is encouraged – residents who have ideas or thoughts on what should be depicted on these water tanks to reflect our community and state should email suggestions to domenic@cheyenne.org.  

“We have a strong arts and culture presence in our community to the point that we have been called an 'art mecca' by Forbes Magazine,” said Domenic Bravo, CEO/President for Visit Cheyenne. “With our distinctive painted boots, vibrant murals, and bronzes displayed throughout the community, along with some incredible art programming, it makes sense to add beautiful artwork to these large water tanks.”

The project timeline is ambitious but exciting. Once an artist is selected, a budget is finalized, and the necessary funds have been raised, the goal is to complete the mural installation by July 4, 2025. This date marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, and the water tanks will be one of many commemorative efforts honoring this historic occasion and highlighting Cheyenne’s contribution to the nation.
