The United States of America will mark a major milestone on July 4, 2026 – the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the City of Cheyenne is planning a months-long celebration for 2026, featuring events and activities that showcase our country’s rich history, cultural diversity, and enduring spirit.

Mayor Patrick Collins has appointed an America 250 Commission to organize and lead the celebration.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate our shared American heritage,” Collins said. “To give the city and state the epic celebration it deserves, we need to start early and start fast, and that’s what we’re doing today.”

Nathaniel Trelease will serve as chairman of the commission. Trelease has chaired the Capitol Avenue Bronze Commission since its inception in 2021.

“I’m excited to kickoff planning for our celebration and I’m thrilled that Nathaniel was willing to take on this new and important project”, Collins said. "We invite everyone to join in this momentous celebration and honor the spirit of freedom captured in the Declaration and the special place that Wyoming has in our nation’s history.”

“The celebration and events leading up to it will focus on inspiring learning about our American history and encouraging for gratitude for our shared heritage through acts of service to the community,” Trelease said. “We will celebrate the ideals of the American founding that would, in time, make their way from Independence Hall in Philadelphia to the land we now call Wyoming.”

The mayor said that the anniversary celebration will feature:

  • A parade and fireworks display
  • Exhibitions and museum showcases
  • Patriotic concerts and performances
  • Education programs and projects in the schools
  • Presentation on key American ideals at landmarks in the city
  • Community service projects and volunteer initiatives

The mayor also appointed Rita Meyer, Tucker Fagan, Tom Bass, Lexie Garrett, and Diane Prunty to the commission.

More information on the 250th anniversary celebration, including event schedules and participation opportunities will be released in the coming months and into 2025. A website will be launched soon.
