CHEYENNE – Beginning Monday, September 25th, absentee ballots can be requested from the City of Cheyenne’s Office of the City Clerk for a special election to reauthorize a special assessment of 20 mills within the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) district for the next four years.

The general election is set from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 18th in the lobby of the Cheyenne Depot (121 W. 15th St.) in Cheyenne. Absentee ballots must be received in the City Clerk’s office by 3:00 p.m. on October 18th.

All commercial, nonresidential property owners in the DDA district are eligible to vote in this election.

Boundaries of the 78-block DDA district are 15th to 22nd Streets, and from House to Snyder Avenues. The district also includes property south of the viaduct, bound by Capitol and Central Avenues and Deming Drive.

As noted in the ballot wording, mill levy funds “will be used exclusively for landscaping and maintenance of public areas; planning and management of development or improvement activities; promotion of public events; and activities in support of business recruitment and development.”

With the memorandum of understanding reached in March between the City of Cheyenne and the DDA, no administrative costs will be paid for by the levy moving forward. With these funds, all the planters within the district are filled with flowers each summer. Funds also go toward the sponsorship of events that entice residents to visit the district. These include Fridays on the Plaza, Edge Fest, Community Appreciation Day, Downtown Halloween, Old West Holiday, the Running of the Santas, and many more.
