Mayor Orr Announces Rollout of Cheyenne U, Providing Employees With Free Educational Opportunities

2019-03-CheyenneUniversityv2-01

CHEYENNE – Learning doesn’t need to end after high school or college. The City of Cheyenne has embraced that notion with the creation of Cheyenne U; a program designed to offer free learning opportunities for employees on a wide spectrum of job-related fields.

The program works in conjunction with the City’s 15-month strategic operational plan known as StratOp. Specifically, Cheyenne U is designed to offer City employees an avenue to expand their knowledge base with educational and skill-related opportunities in a classroom-like structure. With each class, the City coordinates with a subject matter expert, often resulting in utilizing the skillset of current employees and individuals in our community.

Thus far the Cheyenne U program, under the direction of Education Facilitator April Klahn, have conducted four classes with employees on the topics of: Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities (ADA), the Wyoming Retirement System, acting Lieutenant classes for Fire Department personnel, and training on the City’s new human resource payroll system (Paycom).

“I’m really excited about this new education and training program being offered by the City of Cheyenne for city employees,” Klahn said. “I think it will give employees the opportunity to improve their skills and possibly prepare for the next step in their career. Knowledge is power!”

Klahn highlighted the possibility of conducting future Cheyenne U events outside of a traditional classroom setting.

“The classes that were delivered by April were incredibly beneficial to our firefighters who are interested in assuming more leadership and management roles at Cheyenne Fire Rescue.” Said Nick Siemens, CFR Division Chief of Training.

Soon, Cheyenne U will host classes on the following topics:

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Interviewing and Hiring for Managers
  • Effective Disciplinary Approach
  • Worker’s Compensation for Managers
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Microsoft Word
  • Robert’s Rule of Order

Cheyenne U is a byproduct of the Culture area of focus for the City’s StratOp process. Culture was deemed one of five areas of focus along with Processes and Systems, Finance, Development, and Community Engagement. Within each area, the City is developing and implementing goals, direction, and objectives to aid in efficiency and connectivity within City Hall and to all those in the community. Each area of focus is led by a designated City staffer with various members of city council, staff, and community members assigned to work on each area of focus.
